David wonders:
"A friend and I were discussing the strereotypical, loud mouthed drill
sargeant--the prototype would have to be Louis Gossett, Jr. in AN OFFICER
AND A GENTLEMAN.

Would ya'll be willing to list other examples of this character on the screen?"

Almost any film depicting military training might do--consider some war films
(and cartoons!) from World War II especially. You might check on the Gary
Cooper sequence from IF I HAD A MILLION, among other pre-war films. For a later
film, see THE D.I. with Jack Webb and it's obverse: THE SERGEANT, with Rod
Steiger.
