Another point on the dubbing/subtitle conversation here:
 
When two or more versions of a film--one subtitled, the other(s) dubbed--
there has been a general preference (in the US at least) for the subtitled
version.  This is true of older films like THE BLUE ANGEL and of more
contemporary films, such as Herzog's NOSFERATU.  I understand that the
previews of the dubbed version of the latter film were so bad that the
subtitled one was only one to get US release.
 
Is this just a matter of taste or preference, or are there other aesthetic
matters involved in prefering one version to another?
