DIGGING CHTHONIC CULTURE AN ARCHAEOLOGY OF THE UNDERGROUND ca. 1997 FEBRUARY 14-16, 1997 The University of British Columbia, Vancover, B.C. The purpose of this conference is to fully explore the state of underground culture circa 1997, in this age of an omnivorous mainstream/dominant culture. What is the underground? Where is the underground? What are its defining characteristics? How does it stand in relation to the dominant culture? How/why is the underground being co-opted? Is there continued hope for a popularly-derived, non-vertical/ hierarchical underground culture? These are some of the questions that this conference will address in all realms pertaining to culture as we know it: in film, popular music, theatre, the visual arts, performance art, literature, comics, video, 'zines, etc. In addition to our academic panels we also hope to host a number of panels which will concern themselves with the underground's practical issues, and to organize various showcases of authentic/vital underground culture. Those interested in participating should submit a one-page (250 word) proposal to : Anthony Kinik and/or Peter Urquhart Dept. of Theatre, Film, and Creative Writing/Film Program University of British Columbia 6354 Crescent Rd.
