Dear list-members Ritwik Ghatak's films are being shown at the Lincoln Center, from Sept. 28 to Oct. 4. Most people know of Satyajit Ray, but very little is known of other filmmakers from the sub-continent; Ghatak is one of them. A contemprory of Ray, Ghatak's films are informed by his own experience of the partition of India, the famine of 1944 and his socialist beliefs. Ghatak's work has some gorgeous cinematography, and is very interesting in it's use of sound, other than his experiments with narrative form, which are quite unique in their grounding in the epics. I would be interested in hearing from people who have seen his films, because his films are impossible to see, as he is not a 'star' like Ray, adn one can't get copies on video, and it is difficult to have any kind of discussion about his films.
