Just to clarify my earlier point about the darker skin tones of the poacher,
which Richard Leskosky and David Desser thought was going a bit far.
 
I agree.  I was just reporting what several reviewers (including Siskel and/or
Ebert) at the time had mentioned.  It *is* a generic/narrative convention
with ancient roots, but whether that makes it racist, archetypal, or merely
cliched has, I think, to be taken in the context of the film as a whole.
