It depends what you mean by "major theatrical film," Mylan.
 
There are handheld shots as early as Abel Gance's NAPOLEON (1927) and,
moreover, the hand-held work in TOM JONES (1963) was probably inspired, in
part, by the French New Wave films of a few years previous.
