"The Brig" was made by Jonas Mekas in 1964.  His other experimental films
are quite different from "The Brig,"  but worthwhile checking out -- they
are often described as "film diaries" (such as e.g. "He Stands in a Desert
Counting the Seconds of His Life" (1985)).  I believe the Filmmakers Co-op
in New York has his works in distribution, if you're interested in finding
out more about Mekas' work.
