First of all, let me apologize if I sounded cranky about the recent advertising. The fortunate/unfortunate fact about email is how quickly you can send it out there! I did want to discuss what we consider to be acceptable. One mention that there was a place that fixed cameras was one thing, but 5 lengthy missives that I got awhile back about their services seemed a bit much. Also is there in fact any statute out there besides internet etiquette to prevent such things? Secondly, I want to clarify that I don't consider sex and violence to be equivalent in any way except that by over-exposure we have become similarly numbed to them. More and more often I find myself waiting in boredom for the mandatory sex scene or explosion, car crash etc. to be over so we can get back to the story. I think that with many people who believe that our exposure to sex and violence on tv should be limited are presupposing that without the offending material tv would be fine. I think that the mere act of spending any significant amount of time watching tv may well be more troublesome, but that is another discussion. It may be as impossible to draw any concrete scientific conclusions about this as about the effects of violence and sex in movies. There are too many variable at the individual level, and not enough "hard science" methods to quantify things. We can't know everything with certainty, it's one of those issues where we can just hear all the arguments and make our best guess about what is right for us and for our children. ---- To signoff SCREEN-L, e-mail [log in to unmask] and put SIGNOFF SCREEN-L in the message.
