Here is the address for a company which produces flipbooks, thaumatropes, shadow plays, zoetropes, and other optical toys. I like to use these in the classroom to illustrate points about the archeology of cinema and about how the sensory perception of cinema takes place. I've also found them handy for doing the non-academic public lecture on early cinema directed towards audiences with little or no background in film studies. The company is very prompt about responding to requests for their catalog. Their collection of thaumatropes is fabulous....all replicas of actual 19th century products. It is much more effective to pass around several of these than to rely on textbook illustrations: Optical Toys PO Box 23 Putney, VT 05346 Hope this is helpful.
