geez...carbon rods are LONG outdated...they are still rarely used as
LIGHTING fixtures on a set (the light they put out is unique and
sometimes necessary) but they are hard to find and require a operator to
'crank the rods' every once and awhile while they burn down.
 
Because of the intense heat they generate (there's actually a flame/arc
between the rods) they are not well suited to projection, although their
most common use these days is as high intensity follow spots in
theaters/concert halls. You MIGHT be able to find a few arc projectors
still in use, but I think you will find most using a quartz/halogen lamp.
