Eligibility: All entries must have been created by persons enrolled in a College, University, or graduate-level institution at the time of production, & should have been completed no earlier than May 1994. Entrants must have had the primary creative control of the work. Works may have originated on any film or video format, but must be submitted for preview on VHS. Screening formats are 1/2", 3/4" video, and 16mm film. PAL and SECAM are acceptable for preview only. Entries must be in English or sub-titled in English. JUDGING: All works will be prescreened by a panel of film/video makers, teachers, and curators. Finalists will be sent on to the Finalist Judges. Past judges have included Susan Seidelman, Allison Anders, Tom Kalin, Christine Vachon, Allie Light, Christine Choy, Art Clokey, Jill Godmilow, Michael Rubbo & others. Categories: Works will be considered in the categories of Animation, Documentary, Experimental, and Narrative and may be either film or video. The festival reserves the right to recategorize entries if necessary. AWARDS: at least $7,000 in prizes will be awarded The Festival will announce first, second and third place winners, and several finalists in each of the four categories. First place winners in each category will receive a $1,000 product grant from the Kodak Worldwide Student Program. Other prizes will be donated by Equipment Emporium, Michael Wiese Productions, Penguin USA, Mole Richardson, and Sennheiser USA. All accepted works will receive prizes or cash honoraria. All entrants will receive a free copy of the UFVA International Festival Directory for Students, the worldUs only exhibition and competition resource guide created specifically for students. PREMIERE: Each year, all award winners and finalists in the UFVA STUDENT FILM & VIDEO FESTIVAL are premiered at the annual conference of the University Film & Video Association. This year, the conference will be held at Chapman University in Orange, California, August 6-10, 1996. A year-long tour of selected festival winners & finalists will begin after the conference. Last year's tour featured over 25 venues, including: American Cinemateque, Los Angeles; Rhode Island School of Design; Neighborhood Film/Video Project, Philadelphia; University of the Philippines; Florida International University, Miami; University of Arizona; University of North Texas; American University; Indianapolis Art Center; University of Memphis; University of Arizona; Wellington City Gallery, New Zealand; La Trobe University, Australia. entry fees : $15 for U.S. entries $10 for UFVA student members $10 (U.S. currency) for entries from schools outside the U.S. (checks payable, in US$, to: TEMPLE UNIVERSITY) To submit: Send completed entry form with clearly labelled (length, name, address, phone) VHS preview cassette; a short description of the work and maker's Bio (not longer than 1 page combined); and entry fee.
