There's an interesting article by Margaret Smith in Cineaction! (Summer/Fall
1990).  It looks at eight comedies by Leo McCary as potential agents against
"repression, sublimated aggression, and social convention."  One might also
consider Roth's article on His Girl Friday published in Screen (V30 1/2 1990).
A doctoral dissertation that discussed screwball comedies from a feminist
perspective was completed at the University of Maryland College Park some
years ago, though the name of the author currently escapes me.  I believe
it was in the late 80's early 1990's.
