Larry Jarvik's enquiry re "Sooty" has spurred me to this observation.
Do correspondents know that "Masterpiece Theatre" censors British drama?
When "The Final Cut" was originally screened on British televiision the
actress Isla Blair appeared topless. Some British newspapers commented on
the dedication Ms. Blair showed to her craft since she is in her 50s. No
matter how this observation may be read, there is other evidence of past
censorship.
When "The Borgias" was transmitted some years ago, PBS left out an orgy
scene where decadents Italians participated in a horse race riding nude
females. Furthermore, Helen Mirren bitterly complained when she learned
that PBS censored PRIME SUSPECT (Did anyone notice the very choppy editing in t
he final part of PS2?).
No matter what one's opinion is, it definitely seems that Puritanism is
alive and well both in American culture and politics (as Pat's victory in
Louisiana yesterday revealed).
