Of course Kaja Silverman's discussion of the topic in her book on
the voice in cinema (*The Acoustic Mirror*) is well known. But a recent
issue of *Critical Inquiry* (summer 1995, vol. 21, no. 4) also features an
interesting article by Carol Clover which brings up some of the issues
mentioned in the recent post under this heading. Clover gives numerous
references which might help the author in answering some of the questions,
which, while not exactly Clover's focus, are not unrelated.
This well-intentioned and interesting post nevertheless makes me
wonder whether people go to the library, search the web or open reference
books before they post questions to this list. Have we really become so
plugged into our little media outlets that we can't flip through a few pages
or browse a few bookshelves anymore?
Sincerely,
Edward R. O'Neill
