The story that I read spoke about Reynolds not being a "mature" enough
singing talent for the studio bosses. My opinion is that it was a production
decision in oder to keep Hagen's voice from becoming yet another
distraction. Reynolds does all of her own singing in the film (It has been a
long time since I have seen this film so it could be that Reynolds does some
of her own singing, but I do recollect it is all) except when she is looping
for Hagen. At that point it is Hagen looping for Reynolds who is looping for
Hagen. No wonder I love this picture.
 
Watch the film and you will find it pretty easy to tell when and who is
singing.
