Godard was born in Paris, but the question of his nationality is not so simple as the post by Edwin Jahiel suggests. According to Colin Macabe's bio in *Jean -Luc Godard: Son + Image* JLG's father, Paul Jean Godard, was a midle-class doctor while his mother, Odile Monod, was the fabulously wealthy hieress of a fourtune made by her families chain of stores Monoprix. Shrotly after Jean-Luc's birth Dr Godard moved the family to Nyon, Switzerland. He shuttled between the twocountries throughout his childhood. Since 1976 Godard has resided primarily in Switzerland. He has called himself an "exile of the cinema" in the video *Senario du Film Passion.* While according to immigration officers he may technically still be a French citizen (Iam not even sure of this) he is deeply associated with Switzerland. It would be hartd not to wonder what the relation of films like *JLG par JLG,* *Sauve Qui Peut (La Vie),* and *Novelle Vauge,* have to do with Swiss national cinema. lgs ---- To signoff SCREEN-L, e-mail [log in to unmask] and put SIGNOFF SCREEN-L in the message.
