The daughter in Yimou's 'To Live' becomes mute as a result of a
childhood fever. Other than adding to the film's cycle of despair, I'm
not sure if it holds other social significance in the film. I've been
trying to place it in relation to the role of the specific generation of
women in Chinese history but I'm not entirely sure I am on the right
track. I've only just seen the film yesterday so am still mulling it
over. Anybody have any thoughts?
