From: Tony Williams English SIUC The director was Terence Malik who later went on to direct DAYS OF HEAVEN and will, hopefully, soon direct a new film version of James Jones's THE THIN RED LINE, unless screwed up by Hollywood. On Spacek's character, I don't really think she qualifies under the mental disability label. She is slow, in a world of her own (as is the Sheen character) but is more caught within an illusion than anything else. Her voiuce-over narration gives her perspective, one which Malik wishes the audience to contrast with events depicted on the screen.
