I don't have the citation with me, but it's not hard to find if you can find old Cinefantastiques--they only published a few times a year so there's not much to look through. Perhaps you could call them for the citation. I remember it was pretty early since the articles were discussing Lynch being hired to direct Dune. I have had my own "explantions" of some of the goings on in this movie, tied no doubt to how my own unique unconscious makeup responded to some of the ambiguous imagery (no doubt, too, that effect was part of Lynch's intent). But the articles in the magazine do a pretty good job of interpreting a particular psycho-sexual take on what is going on. The main article is pretty long and extensive, too, and goes into a lot of detail not only about the content of the film but on issues related to the crazed production of it. It's probably what you are looking for, although not quite an academic piece. If you have a real hard time, let me know since I know I can track it down in a library in the area.
