What exactly do you mean by "the producer?" The producer, the executive producer, or the line producer? I am a script/continuity supervisor who works on feature films here in NYC. In terms of current practices in the industry, the role of the producer changes according to the size and scope of the film. For example, on a big budget project, the producer delegates the hiring of the below-the-line personnel who will comprise the crew to a production manager or line producer. But, on a small, independent film, besides bringing together the creative team, the producer is also responsible for putting together the crew. The producer sets the tone for how the crew is treated by the director and the cinematographer and under what conditions they are expected to perform. So, the producer influences the quality of the film in many more subtle ways than you might think. ---- To signoff SCREEN-L, e-mail [log in to unmask] and put SIGNOFF SCREEN-L in the message.
