From: Tony Williams English SIUC A lot of material is available. For starters, I'd suggest you look up the entries in the respective AMERICAN FILM INSTITUTE CATALOGS issued, especially the 1931-1940 volume. Then decide on sub-divisions, particularly is you are including women prison movies (e.g. CAGED HEAT). From general memory, the following items should be availabale TWENTY THOUSAND YEARS IN SING SING (1933) remade as CASTLE ON THE HUDSON (1940), I AM A FUGITIVE FROM A CHAIN GANG, EACH DAWN I DIE, BRUTE FORCE, COOL HAND LUKE, THE CONCRETE JUNGLE (u.s. release title of a Joseph Losey 1960 British movie starring Stanley Baker whose original title escapes me); THE HILL starring Sean Connery (if you are into War prison camp movies then BRIDGE ON THE RIVER KWAI, THE CAMP ON BLOOD ISLAND, THE GREAT ESCAPE, THE COLDITZ STORY, ALBERT RN, THE WOODEN HORSE, 20,000 WOMEN etc etc would all qualify. Also don't forget Hong Kong Cinema. Ringo Lam has directed PRISON ON FIRE, I & II starring Chow Yun-Fat. Do you want to go into national cinema versions? The choices and the field is endless. Other titles come to mind - BAD BOYS, WEEDS, etc. I'm sure if you consult various blibliographies you will find plenty of titles relevant to a minor genre needing further exploration. Good Luck, Tony Williams. ---- To signoff SCREEN-L, e-mail [log in to unmask] and put SIGNOFF SCREEN-L in the message. Problems? Contact [log in to unmask]
