Michael Hordern's narrating voice in Kubrick's BARRY LYNDON is both
unreliable and 'omniscient'. The narrative device, from what I recall, is a
deliberate cinematic equivalent of Thackeray's 19th century novel,
with its boastful first-person
narrator, which was itself a satire of 18th century picaresque hero tales.
