From: Tony Williams English SIUC I don't think Kubrick can be described as a "petulant kid." Of course, his action in withdrawing the film is irritating for those who want to study it. But consider his perspective. If you directed a complex film with overtones of violence would you want your work smeared on the front page of Rupert Murdoch's THE SUN (along with the NEWS OF THE WORLD, THE STAR, DAILY MIRROR and all the mind-polluting tabloids in the U.K. - plus the abysmal level of market-forces television now endemic) and see it distorted, defiled, trashed out of all recognition without having the benefit of an intelligent discussion? This is not the case of a Hitchcock withdrawing his films to build up his reputation but somebody refusing to see his work defecated on in a British society now noted for crudeness, vulgarity, viciousness, and right-wing reaction. Perhaps he is waiting for a change in society??? ---- To signoff SCREEN-L, e-mail [log in to unmask] and put SIGNOFF SCREEN-L in the message. Problems? Contact [log in to unmask]
