my current favorite proto-horror theorybook is terry castle's "the female
thermometer: the invention of the uncanny in the eighteenth century" -
for film folks, it contains an excellent essay (originally published in,
i think, "critical inquiry") on phantasmagoria shows and other spectral
technologies which anticipated the development of film apparatus. very
edifying.

does anyone out there know of anyone who has tried to distinguish between
the "gothic" and "horror" as generic categories? the obvious answer seems
to be that the latter is a marketing category, but i'm more interested in
considering content-based differences.
