On Cary Grant and nationality:
Yes, he was British, but in Hollywood films he was as often as not cast as
a specifically American character: see "Operation Petticoat," "Mr.
Blandings," "To Catch a Thief," "Arsenic and Old Lace" (as a Brooklynite,
no less!), etc.  Grant's odd (is it English? American?) accent becomes a
marker of his very specific persona in film -- see Tony Curtis'
impersonation  in "Some Like It Hot" (Jack Lemmon says: "Nobody talks like
that!").
