As a postscript to David Desser's post: I grew up in the 50s, and Jeff Chandler was my idol. Today it seems that his case, although not unique, was typical of a Hollywood attitude toward "race" and "identity" in general. His first major role was as a Zionist militant in SWORD IN THE DESERT (something like that--it's a _long_ time ago) and ever after he was cast as an Apache, an Arab, a half-Apache, generic white guys, whatever. He even lost his real name in favor of a typical Universal-style movie name of the age (Rock Hudson, Rex Reason, there seem to have been dozens). All this mystifed me when I was in high school.
