----------------------------Original message---------------------------- Popular European Cinema Conference Part 2 featuring "Midsummernight's Sex/Comedy" July 5-9, 1996 Punkaharju, Finland=20 First Announcement of PEC '96 The first Popular European Cinema Conference held in September 1989 at the University of Warwick in England brought together a large number of distinguished scholars, critics, lecturers, historians and students to discuss the various meanings of the terms 'the popular' and 'the European'. The aim of the Conference was to acknowledge the significance of (and the need for) a more specific study of European cinema as a popular tradition. The results of this special event have been appropriately documented in a book, Popular European Cinema, edited by Richard Dyer and Ginette Vincendeau (London: Routledge 1992). Like many successful popular films, also a splendid conference deserves 'a sequel'. Finnish Society for Cinema Studies is therefore proud to present Popular European Cinema Conference Part 2 (Colloque sur le Cin=E9ma Europ=E9en Populaire Part 2) in July 5-9, 1996. The upcoming conference will take place at the heart of Finland, in the exceptionally beautiful locality of Punkaharju. The 5-day event will include both lectures, workshops and a film festival. Popular European Cinema Conference '96 is being organized with the help and support of an appointed International Advisory Board the members of which include Richard Dyer (University of Warwick), Ginette Vincendeau (Warwick), Thomas Elsaesser (University of Amsterdam) and Jan Olsson (University of Stockholm). English and French are the official languages of PEC '96. An impressive cavern hewn into the bedrock, Retretti (Finland's most celebrated art centre), will function mainly as the film festival screening facility. The festival program will be divided into two sections: the first one will consist of films dealing with the issues brought up at the conference, the second section will consist of 'uniquely Finnish' films. Another center of activities (workshops, screenings) will be the national Forest Museum and Forest Information Centre. It's not by accident that this very museum is being located in Punkaharju; a veil of forest surrounds the beautiful lakes of the area wherever you go. =20 Punkaharju offers accommodation to suit all tastes; more information on various possibilities (State Hotel; holiday villages; etc.) as well as the side events will be available on the second announcement of PEC '96, the Invitation Program.=20 Call for Papers=20 Popular European Cinema Conference '96 hopes to inspire its participants with the working title "Midsummernight's sex/comedy". Sexuality and/or comedy are the main components of next year's theme; all of you are cordially invited to submit proposals and abstracts dealing with the various topics of the (either one or both) two aspects of the above mentioned theme. Third aspect of PEC'96 will be nature and especially its significance in the lives of the Scandinavian people. The third day of the festival, Sunday (named "Scandinavian Day"), takes a closer look at the effects the Northern midsummernight has on its people and sexuality. When planning a paper you will most likely come up with titles of films you regard as interesting in relation to your work. If so, you are more than welcome to make suggestions regarding the programming. It is you who will finally select the PEC -section of the film festival: oldies, rarities or even brand new films - with your help PEC '96 can become a real treat. If you have an idea for a workshop session or a paper (or a film) you would like to present at the conference, please, get in touch with the organizing team of PEC '96: Outi Heiskanen (secretary) e-mail: [log in to unmask] Ari Honka-Hallila " [log in to unmask] Kimmo Laine " [log in to unmask] Jukka Sihvonen Mervi Pantti " [log in to unmask] Please, fill in the preliminary abstract & reply form (see below) and send it to the Finnish Society for Cinema Studies no later than October 31st 1995 either by mail (address: Henrikinkatu 10, 20500 Turku, Finland), e-mail or fax (+358-21- 2500 618).
