----------------------------Original message---------------------------- This discussion didn't really focus on the quality of PBS programing, but since I saw one of the most interesting documentaries I have seen in a long time on PBS this week and last week, I had to comment. The Frontline special _Divided Memories_, dealing with recovered memories and the recovery movement in psychotherapy was educational and fascinating. I never see anything slightly provacative on commercial television. Some of it is entertaining obviously but nothing else. POV screens short films that would never see the light of day on any cable channel. While some local stations (like Channel 11 in Chicago apparently) show independent films, the cable networks do not. I also buy documentaries for an academic library. Lots of the programs I buy are broadcast on PBS. I find obscure programs in other ways, but as far as tv is concerned, I rarely see anything of interest for our collection anywhere else. PBS is not obsolete. Kristine Brancolini Indiana University Libraries
