My apologies if someone has already mentioned this somewhat obvious
example, but I hadn't noticed it yet: in Woody Allen's <Bananas> there're a
couple humorous moments playing with the conventional diegetic/non-diegetic
musical conventions. The second of these involves a group of
instrument-less string quartet players whose "playing" annoys Allen (for
more on that scene and the diegetic/non-diegetic split, see Royal Brown's
<Overtones and Undertones: Reading Film Music>, UC Press, 1994, 67-68).
