My own feeling about the NPR/PBS debate:
 
If their programming is truley valuable, of a high quality, and in demand by
the public, then NPR and PBS should survive the same way ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN,
MTV, TNN, VH1 (and the list goes on) do - advertising!  OR through donations
from their audience, but PBS and NPR have had the market on that cornered for
some time now.  If there are enough viewers and listeners, then donations
should be at a high enough level to maintain PBS and NPR programming without
a problem.
