NTSC is 525 lines, 60 fields/second (30 frames/sec). 6 MHz channel. 4.2
MHz video bandwidth. 0.75 VSB.
'Never Twice The Same Colour' refers to the problems with the colour subcarrier.
 
PAL has several varients, your's in Sweden is 625 lines, 50 fields/second
(25 frames/sec). 8 MHz channel. 5 MHz video bandwidth. 0.75 VSB.
'Pictures At Last' refers to the development delays.
 
SECAM also has several variants the main being Vertical polarisation
(France, etc) and Horizontal polarization (middle east, etc.).  Its also
625 lines, 50 fields/second (25 frames/sec). 8 MHz channel, 5.5 Mhz video
bandwith. 1.25 VSB
'System Essentially Contrary to the American Method' is self-explanitory.
 
The typical home tv generally only displays 400 lines, a VHS tape
generally only provides 200-300 lines, so most of us here in NTSC-land
aren't even getting the 'full-power' of NTSC.
