Hello everyone. On November 30, 1994, the University of Washington (Seattle) administration announced its proposal to eliminate at total of eight departments, in order to meet the $12 million budget cut mandated by the State Legislature. The most significant proposed elimination is the entire School of Communications. Communications students and faculty members are shocked, angry, and frustrated, especially since the School's graduate program ranked 13th in the nation and the undergraduate program ranked 10th in 1993 (Gourman Report). The proposals are subject to committee review. A final decision will be made in April 1995 by university deans. During the months the elimination is under review, no new students will be admitted to the school. Communications students have begun organizing opposition to the proposal. One step is to convince the acting Arts and Sciences Dean John Simpson by flooding his e-mail account with messages. To those who sympathize and understand, I ask your support by simply sending Dean John Simpson an e-mail message as follows: Subject Heading: UW Needs CMU Message Body: You may leave this blank, or if you wish, you may write some words of support for the school.
