Hello everyone.  On November 30, 1994, the University of Washington
(Seattle) administration announced its proposal to eliminate at total of
eight departments, in order to meet the $12 million budget cut mandated
by the State Legislature.  The most significant proposed elimination is
the entire School of Communications.  Communications students and faculty
members are shocked, angry, and frustrated, especially since the School's
graduate program ranked 13th in the nation and the undergraduate program
ranked 10th in 1993 (Gourman Report).
 
The proposals are subject to committee review.  A final decision will be
made in April 1995 by university deans.  During the months the
elimination is under review, no new students will be admitted to the school.
 
Communications students have begun organizing opposition to the
proposal.  One step is to convince the acting Arts and Sciences Dean John
Simpson by flooding his e-mail account with messages.
