Hello again folks-
I am currently working on a project that would involve the transfer of many
early silent films to digital form for puposes of providing expanded
access to them as well as preserving them in archival-type form. At this
point, I am investigating the different software that may be used to capture
and store video images. I have Microsoft Video, but I'm very dissatisfied
with both the quality of the capture, the size of the screen it allows (2"x3")
and the amount of memory that is needed to store the captured images. I seem
to remember from my lurkings on this list that several of you use capture
software in your classes to allow your students to support their theses with
film clips. Are there really any suitable pieces of software out there that
would make a project such as this feasible? Is Microsoft the only real player
in this game (I somehow doubt it)? Is there a reliable compression algorithm
to reduce the vast amount of memory needed to store video segments? Any
input, suggestions, etc. would be much appreciated. Thanx o'plenty - JC
