Old news: Pierce Brosnan will be the new James Bond in the upcoming Goldenye, Anthony Hopkins may be the villain, etc., etc. But even older news is that Sharon Stone and Emma Thompson were under consideration to take over the Bond role-goodbye James, hello Jane or Jennifer Bond. Or at least tabloid TV reported as much. Back in April Inside Edition reported on the story, even quoting Las Vegas oddmakers on who would win out (Stone, of course). They also did street interviews with purported Bond fans cheerfully responding to the proposed change. My research has failed to turn up any (American) other coverage of this mildly intriguing rumor. Actually, it's more than mildly intriguing, considering the Bond character's position at the crux of issues relating to gender, nationality, race, and even, considering the work done by Ecco and Bennett and Woollacott, the construction of critical studies. Does anywone know if Jane Bond was anything more than a passing time killer for tabloid TV? Enquiring minds want to know.
