DEAR PATRICK,
IN RESPONSE TO YOUR QUERY AS WHY MOST OF THE POPULAR FILMS HERE
WERE ENGLISH OR AMERICAN IN ORIGIN, I MUST POINT OUT THAT TWO

OF THE FILMS FAREWELL TO THE CONCUBINE IS A CHINESE FILM DIRECTED
BY CHEN KAIGE AND BLUE AND ANOTHER FILM WHITE, PART OF A TRILOGY IS
DIRECTED BY KIESLOWSKI. AS THERE ARE ABOUT 16 MOVIE HOUSES HERE, YOU
CAN SEE FILMS FROM JAPAN, FRANCE, GERMANY ETC. BUT AS IS TRUE AROUND
THE WORLD AMERICAN FILM AND TV PRODUCTION DOMINATE.

THE ENGLISH CONNECTION OR ANGLO AS YOU SAY,AS FOR ME I HATE BEING
CALLED AN ANGLO-SAXON AS ALL ENGLISH SPEAKERS ARE CALLED HERE. WE WON
THE THE
WAR, OBVIOUSLY I'M AMERICAN. BUT THE INFLUENCE STEMS FROM THE YEARS
OF THE BRITISH MANDATE. THAT IS GIVING WAY TO THE AMERICAN INFLUENCE.

AS FOR THE FILM "SCHINDLER'S LIST", I MUST SAY FOR MYSELF IT WAS A
MAGNIFICENTLY MADE FILM AND I THINK THE PRIME CHARACTERISTIC THAT MADE
IT SO GOOD WAS ITS RESTRAINT. AS THIS IS A JEWISH STATE, THERE WERE
A MILLION OPINIONS. BUT THE WORST CRITICISM I HEARD EXPRESSED WAS THE
FACT THAT IT WASN'T A DOCUMENTARY. OF COURSE IT WASN'T. BUT FOR PEOPLE
WHO PERHAPS SELDOM GO TO MOVIES BUT THEY WENT TO THIS ONE BECAUSE OF
THE SUBJECT MATTER, I BELEIVE THEY EXPECTED SOMETHING DRIER AND LESS
PRETTY (OR AS THEY SAY HERE "HOLLYWOODIE",THAT'S HEBREW FOR KITSCH).

I WOULD LIKE TO PASS ON TWO COMMENTS BY TWO HOLOCAUST SURVIVORS AND
FILMMAKERS; EPHRAIM KISHON (NOMINATED FOR 2 ACADEMY AWARDS FOR BEST
FOREIGN FILM) AND ROMAN POLANSKI. ONE ARTICLE BY KISHON IN THE
JERUSALEM POST WAS ENTITLED "THANK YOU, THANK YOU STEVEN". KISHON STATED
THAT SPIELBERG GOT IT ALL RIGHT.
POLANSKI SAID THAT ONLY SPIELBERG COULD HAVE MADE SUCH A WONDERFUL FILM
HE HIMSELF COULD NEVER HAVE DONE IT.
MEANWHILE IT HAS BEEN PLAYING CONTINUOUSLY SINCE DECEMBER.
