Alison, the UFVA "Journal of Film and Video," Vol. 45, Nos. 2-3, Summer-Fall 1993, featured an article entitled "Soft Core/Hard Gore: _Snuff_ as a Crisis in Meaning," by Eithne Johnson and Eric Schaefer. This is a study of a specific film of 1970 called _Snuff_, which was purported to be the real thing. The authors describe it as essentially the same as a film called _The Slaughter_, with a clearly fake "snuff" murder scene tacked on at the end. It's an interesting article, mostly about reactions to reports of snuff films, and this one in particular. The authors note that "despite the mythic status of the snuff film, no agency, from the FBI to the Adult Film Association of America (AFAA), has been able to authenticate the existence of the genuine article." It seems the AFAA even offered a $25,000 reward if someone could produce an authenticated snuff film, because they were concerned about this bringing down the heat on their industry.
