Cunningham On Camera : Film Retrospective, April 26 - May 5
The first New York retrospective of films and videotapes of this
visionary choreographer's work.  The Film Society of Lincoln Center's
Walter Reade Theatre located at 165 West 65th Street above Alice Tully

Among the retrospective  highlights will be the New York premiere of
BEACH BIRDS FOR CAMERA, the most recent film made by Cunningham and
filmmaker Elliot Caplan, with music by John Cage.  This was one of the
last collaborations between Cunningham and Cage in an intrepid and fertile
artistic partnership.  BEACH BIRDS FOR CAMERA will be shown in a 35mm
widescreen adaptation of this startling 1991 dance which combines black
and white with color film.  It received the 1993 IMZ Dance Screen Award
in Frankfurt and the Grand Prize at the New York Dance on Camera Festival.
 
Other highlights are the screening of CAGE/CUNNINGHAM by Elliot Caplan
(1991), the award winning film portrait of the collaboration of Cunningham
and John Cage, as well as CHANGING STEPS (1989), POINTS IN SPACE (1986),
and new prints of CHANNELS/INSERTS (1982), LOCALE (1980), WALKAROUND TIME
(1973), STORY (1964), and CRISES (1961).
 
The program also includes excerpts and selections of rare footage supplied
 through the cooperation of the Merce Cunningham Archives.  Cunningham Dance
 Foundation Archivist David Vaughan will introduce the program on April 30 at
6 p.m. and on May 2 at 6 p.m.
