A particularly fine propaganda film to teach is Frank Capra's PRELUDE TO WAR, first in the WHY WE FIGHT series--a propaganda classic. I teach it & then teach IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE to show how same values inform each. Also, it's especially interesting to show how Capra used conventions of gangster films to portray the villains of WWII. In the same WHY WE FIGHT series, THE NEGRO SOLDIER is especially interesting. It does a capsule history of African-Americans in US w/o ever mentioning slavery--a pretty amazing trick! Of course, the film was made largely to get whites to accept African-Americans in the military, and it scrupulously avoided anything that its audience might h ave not wanted to think about. Hope these help. bitnet tbbyer01@ulkyvm; internet [log in to unmask] Thomas B. Byers Department of English/University of Louisville Louisville KY 40292
