Does anyone have opinions on Jean Renoir's use of vertical and horizontal
barriers in THE GRAND ILLUSION and THE RULES OF THE GAME that results in the
first film's optimism and the second's pessimism.
 
He mentions these barriers in his book MY LIFE AND MY FILMS.  Vertical
barriers being manmade or false barriers, like the borders of Countries.
Horizontal barriers being constant, like in a cast system.
