There's quite an informative article about Huston's war trilogy by Gary
Edgerton called "Revisiting the Recordings of Wars Past" from the Journal
of Popular Film and Television, v. 15, n. 1, Spring 1987. It effectively
traces Huston's progression from "Report from the Aleutians" through
"Battle of San Pietro" to "Let There Be Light"--a progression that seems
to lead inevitably to VietNam. "San Pietro" had its own problems with the
censors, since its brutality exceeds its usefulness as propaganda.
