The current "third" seems to be the New York State Capital District
(Albany, Schenectady and Troy). "Ironweed" logically started it off a few years
ago, and more recently "Scent Of a Woman" and "The Age Of Innocence" have been
filmed there. According to reports, filmmakers like the easy access to all sort
of period settings and the combination of rural, suburban, and urban settings.
That's where I bet the action is.
Now, the problem-We have all that to an even greater degree here in
Buffalo, and nobody's taking advantage of it-least of all the local
governments, who have talked about creating a film commission like the Capital
District's but haven't gotten together yet. (Producers reading this please take
note-a) we are within an hour's drive of one of your favorite North American
cities, Toronto, and b) maybe if someone approaches the area, they'll realize
what we've got to offer (I think our local governments are suffering Buffalo's
cultural cringe-they think nobody will take them seriously, so if someone
comes to us, they'll see that it *can* happen). Also c) it does not,
contrary to popular belief, snow here all year. Syracuse, in fact, gets more
snow each year than we do.) "The Natural" need not have been an aberration.
