I just picked up a nice little book on Canadian Copyright Law which gives quite a good overview of the principles behind the law, some applications of the law, a comparison of the US and Canadian Laws (both how they differ and how they interact) and several appendices which includes the text of the Canadian Copy Right Law and The Copyright Rules and the text of the Rome Copyright Convention 1928 (this is what we call the Berne Convention since its really an amended version of the Berne Copyright Convention 1886). The US finally signed the Berne Convention 1989 and in the chapter comparing the US and Canadian Laws there is an interesting explanation of the changes in copyright status of material produced prior to 1 January 1978, between 1 January 1978 and 28 February 1989, and after 1 March 1989.
