Gary, I'm sorry to hear you didn't like "The Searchers."
        It is widely regarded as one of the greatest pictures of
        all times, but that doesn't mean you or anyone else should
        like it. I do think you may have a misconception about what
        the film is saying about Indians, though. Ethan Edwards,
        the character who most hates Indians, is a bit over the
        edge. His worldview is not necessarily that of the other
        characters and definitely not that of the film itself.
        It seems to me that hating "The Searchers" because Ethan
        is an Indian-hating racist would be a lot like hating "Moby
        Dick" because Ahab is a whale hater. Both films make it clear
        that their principal characters are obsessed and demented.
        John Ford was later to make "Cheyenne Autumn," a film very
        sympathetic of Indians.    Ernie.
