Jerry Henderson asks about ownership of media materials. Our policy at Stanford is that much as would be the case in the English or the Art departments, the student owns his or her own work. There are two restrictions. The first is that the student's work be related to progress toward the degree and be non-commercial; the second is that if the student is hired by the university to do a film or video piece that is submitted in partial fulfillment of the degree requirement, it becomes a "work for hire" and the ownership is to be negotiated. In all cases the university reserves the right to use the work for its own non-commercial purposes. This arrangement seems to work pretty well. -Henry Breitrose Dept. of Communication Stanford
