I think much can be learned not only from a look at Medieval theatrical practices in relation to (especially early) film narrative, but also from Medieval manuscript illumination and church decoration -- such as the "pauper's bibles" that presented in storybook form major narratives from scripture, while using "intertitles" to help fix meanings. Steve Nichols and Michael Camille have written recently on these "proto-cinematic" mixtures of text and image, and it would be great to introduce some of their work into a films studies context. James
