The new DIGEST function is now available on SCREEN-L. And it appears to be working. DIGEST is a newly introduced function of LISTSERV, the software that runs discussion lists like SCREEN-L. Each day LISTSERV collects all of SCREEN-L's messages and packages them in a single file with an index at the start that is based on the subject headings. Here's a portion of what SCREEN-L's digest looked like yesterday (the number after the subject heading indicates how many times that that subject appeared): 1. Rouch- Human Pyramid (2) 2. Valley Town (3) 3. Rouch- Sandy 4. The Magus, Beat the Devil (3) 5. Thanks on Magus, Beat the Devil ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Thu, 8 Apr 1993 07:26:55 EST From: jay ruby <[log in to unmask]> Subject: Re: Rouch- Human Pyramid Rouch's film The Human Pyramind is not in circulation outside of France. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 8 Apr 1993 07:28:50 EST From: jay ruby <[log in to unmask]> Subject: Re: Valley Town Henry Breitrose, Thanks for the citations. I will post a list if I locate more references. It seems to me that with all the post-mod folk talking about mixed genre as being so hip and current that we ought to look at films like Valley Town as being the precursors to post-mod doc. Anyone got suggestions for other "mixed genre" docs from the 30s onward? Jay Ruby ------------------------------ And so it continues from there to list every message of the day in chronological order. If you receive SCREEN-L in digest form then you are >not< sent the messages one at a time as they come in--which is the standard procedure. I can see how this way of receiving SCREEN-L messages might be more convenient, though less immediate, than the message-by-message format. It's brand new, so experiment with it and let me know what you think. To receive SCREEN-L's digests you need to change your subscription to SCREEN-L by sending e-mail to [log in to unmask] or [log in to unmask] Please note: this mail goes to "listserv" not to "screen-l." In your mail, put this command: SET SCREEN-L DIGESTS If you decide that you do not like digests and want to return to the standard mail system, send e-mail to the same address with this command: SET SCREEN-L MAIL That should do it.
