I'm disappointed no one has mentioned HOMEFRONT. For my money the best series on the box--and, of course, on the verge of cancellation. The show is equisitely produced--visually beautiful. It's also the most politically left programme I've seen on network TV in a very long time. Deals with a close-knit small town in Ohio right after World War II. The show's writers are remarkably well-informed about the historical period. The show's dealt with the forceably removal of women from industry jobs. It's dealt very sympathetically with union organizing, sit-down strikes and the evils of capitalism and capitalists. A current plot point examines the viciousness of the Red Scare in union circles. Perhaps the show's unambivalent leftist and feminist politics are tempered by displacing the issues into the past. Nevertheless, it works. I'd love to hear from others who share my enthusiasm for the show--and hope to turn other Screen-Lers onto the show while it's still around. ABC, Tuesdays, 9:00 pm midwest time.
