Absolutely not. The whole point of capitalism is that a public company
is responsible to its shareholders. They in theory elect the CEO.
I once saw a very bad documentary on Hanson (the company) in which
Lord Hanson (in a burst of rather endearing honesty) explained that
his duties as CEO were firstly to the shareholders, secondly to the customer
and thirdly to the workforce. Slightly less honestly he put him self
in the final category, despite his vast share holding !
 
Now what you say _is_ true of co-operatives, but I gather they have been
out of fashion in the US for the last few decades. (half joke).
