This request is cross-posted to MEDIA-L and SCREEN-L. Dear Listers: I am looking for film titles relating to ancient Rome. Specifically, I am looking for visual imagery to use in an educational communications project about the use of symbols and images for the consolidation and maintenance of power and authority in ancient Rome. The thesis which I would like to illustrate is that the symbols of paternal family authority (*paterfamilias*) which existed in Republican Rome (for example, ancestor worship, ancestor masks, funeral processions, *pietas*, etc.) were usurped by Octavian (Augustus) to consolidate power and authority in the 'state-family' of Imperial Rome of which he was the 'father', the decendant of a diefied Caesar and before that, the Gods. In particular, I would like to show examples of symbolic rituals related to ancestor worship (for example, scenes involving ancestors masks, funeral processions, etc.), and scenes relating to paternal authority and its transfer. In addition, more modern allogoric or analogous uses of symbols of paternal power used to consolidate or legitimize political power or authority in a particular individual or regime.would also be appreciated, especially if these contain symbolic or express references to ancient Rome. Also, is anyone aware of any on-line (Internet or other) sources that might contain still imagery (GIF, PICT or other) relating to any of the above? Any and all suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Please reply direct or to the list.
