With all this talk of films altered a some point in their existence, a question has occured to me based on my main field of study. In the field of music, the study of sketches for a piece of music has achieved great prominence in recent years. It is safe to say that the study of Beethoven's sketches is a field unto itself. Yet I have never understood why such source studies seem of little interest to people who study film. Oh sure, there are articles and books describing various films that have been altered (Stroheim seems to be a favorite), but these incidences do not seem to generate a body of literature examining the various stages that a film undergoes. Are there people out there in netland who could propose reasons why this is so? Thanks very much.
